She is finally back! After her incredible 2017 album “Ctrl”, SZA released “SOS” her second studio album last Friday(9). The record has 23 songs and it’s worth the 5 years wait, once again SZA shows us her incredible vocals and versatility.
Princess Diana
No, you’re not having a deja vu, The album cover was inspired by a photograph of the Princess of Wales taken in 1997, the same year she died in a horrifying accident that horrified the world.
“I just loved how isolated she felt and that’s what I wanted to convey the most.”
Said SZA during an interview for HOT 97
Just like Diana, SZA has gone through some family problems, which is one of the reasons for the delay in her comeback, since she had to take care of her grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer’s.
Collabs
The album is full of feats, and confirmed collaborations for the deluxe version of the album. Featuring Phoebe Bridges, Travis Scott, Don Toliver, the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and a credit to Lizzo on the song “F2F”, the album just grows its potential as one of the best albums of the year.
“Forgiveless”, the last song on the album, is something to look up to. It is a sample for Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s song and for Björk’s “Hidden Place” and some lyrics of the song “Going Down” of the rapper Wu-Tang Clan. It is also confirmed that Lizzo will be featured in the deluxe version of the album, and a collaboration with The Weeknd is rumored, so we sure can expect more coming from her.
SOS
23 songs is a lot and if you are not down to listening to the whole album here goes some of my personal favorites:
- F2F
- Nobody Gets Me
- Blind *
- Shirt *
- Notice Me, Ghost in the Machine (feat. Phoebe Bridges)
*Tiktok hits
The album is really well constructed and I can’t hide the Grammys 2024 vibes that I felt after listening to SZA’s work.
